Water hardness is the result of naturally occurring calcium and magnesium salts. Water containing small amounts of these salts is said to be soft, whilst hard water contains greater levels.

The source of the water supply to your property is the limestone aquifer which lies beneath County Durham. The water is pumped from deep boreholes drilled into the rock which has purified the water since it fell as rainfall many years ago.

There are two types of water hardness, temporary and permanent, which depend on the type of salts present.

  • Temporary hardness is usually the result of dissolved calcium carbonate, which forms the familiar whitish coloured scale seen on kettles.
  • Permanent hardness contains the sulphates of calcium and magnesium, which remain soluble even when heated.
