Bacteriological / algal growth in jug filters.
Customers occasionally contact Hartlepool Water because they have observed particles in their jug water filter. Jug filters remove chlorine from the water and consequently results in the growth of micro-organisms such as bacteria and algae. This can be made worse if the jug filter is left unused for long periods of time or it is allowed to stand in direct sunlight.
What can I do?
It is recommended that you follow the manufacturers guidelines and water is not allowed to stand in the jug for any length of time, especially in direct sunlight.
- Refrigerate treated water that is not going to be used straight away.
- Regularly wash the jug and its associated parts (but not the cartridge).
Black/circular particles in jug filters
Customers also contact Hartlepool Water to advise of black or circular particles coming from their water supply. The particles are usually found floating in the lid when filling up the jug filter.
These particles may have originated from the filter cartridge itself, which requires replacement. Because the carbon and resin filter media are lighter than water, when they are released from the filter, they float upwards, and as a result of the turbulence of the water being poured into the top of the filter, appear in the top hopper.
Running the tap into a clear glass or jug rather than directly into the filter jug can confirm the quality of the mains water.
